Facebook

It was big in 2007.

Facebook shame

As some of you already know - today I signed up for facebook. I can't believe I actually did it, after resisting for so long. On the other hand, I'm suddenly meeting up with a friend I haven't seen in months, maybe even a year.

So I guess in the end it's not al bad, right...?

Right?

Faceboinng?

So despite hating everything Facebook stands for and making a principled withdrawal from the social nightmare earlier this year, I'm now experimenting with a new Drupal for Facebook module that could mean Planet Boinng going live as a Facebook application Smiling

It's early days yet, and not at all working, but in theory Facebook users (ie, the entire world, but more probably just you lot) should be able to add Planet Boinng as an app and start posting to your blog etc all from within Facebook and your profile pages.

Social netwhat?

I was particularly upset to read this article on el Reg today - http://www.theregister.co.uk/2008/01/31/myspace_fb_comscore_drop/ - confirming my very worst fears, that the dominance of my favourite social networking sites may be shortlived.

Yes, sadly, Facebook is on the wane. Myspace (remember that?) is on the slide too. All three of the big social networks - yes, even Bebo - are losing visitors. Apparently they're not quite as addictive as all that - or at least, many people are finding ways to kick the habit.

I am, naturally, deeply saddened at this turn of events.

Why I Hate Facebook, and Why This Site is Also Rubbish

I killed my Facebook self on Friday. I've finally had enough with the thoroughly hyprocritical way in which I couldn't stand Facebook, but wanted to be on it regardless.

Here's an assorted list of reasons why Facebook irritates the hell out of me:

  1. It's a successful community website, which this isn't.
  2. The applications drive me mad.
  3. I don't have a funwall, so how can anyone have posted anything on it?
  4. Why the hell would I want to bite chumps?

Sharing

Because it's always nice to share, you'll now find a selection of little icons below each and every post on Boinng, which will allow you to bookmark or share the story on other sites - for instance, if you like a story click on the "Digg" icon to digg the post up on digg.com, or use the Google "G" to add the story to your own Google/Gmail account bookmarks, or there's even a Facebook icon to share the post on your Facebook wall, not that anyone here uses that s
