The old Savoy - beyond saving
The old Savoy cinema in Petersfield will shortly be no more. The cinema, built in the thirties, closed to cinema-goers in 1986 - but it was given a new lease of life in the nineties when it opened as a nightclub, first under the Oscars name, and then later as Vertigo - the only nightclub in Petersfield and the surrounding area. Ultimately it became a victim of its own success, as its owners decided the proven market for a nightclub and leisure facilities demanded a new, modern, purpose built development (complete with the inevitable sound-proofed flats above).
Work to pull the old Savoy down began last week, and I snapped a picture of it today without it's porch roof - http://www.boinng.com/gallery/Savoy/IMAG0102.jpg.html - I pass the old cinema quite often on my way into work, so I'll probably snap some more as it gradually disappears.
R.I.P the Savoy - it'll be a really sad day when the old sign goes ![]()

That's Really Sad
It really sucks when that happens to historic buildings like that. Everything gets 'developed' now.
.
I went to the last ever film screened there. It was 101 Dalmatians! At least, that's the last kids film they showed.
*sigh*
Just added a few new pics..
Just added a few new pics.. it's still standing at the mo.

I'm gutted that the application to get the building listed was rejected. It's a fabulous example of 1930's architecture.
Couldn't they've turned it into a bingo hall, like all the other old cinemas?
They've finally started in
They've finally started in earnest - a few more pics in the gallery (link above)
I wish people would stop
I wish people would stop knocking down buildings older than 6months - I think Tim'll explode if he becomes anymore nostalgic.
Talking of nostalgia - they are bringing back Opal Fruits for a short period apparently.
.
*sobs*
It's ok Jayne, they will
It's ok Jayne, they will revert back to Starburst soon.
Oh, hang on, I get it - The Savoy...
