Donna Who

Yes I know, another Doctor Who story, but what can I do? Following on swiftly in the latest string of announcements comes the news that the Doctor's full-time companion in series four will be none other than Catherine Tate, reprising her role from the Christmas Special as Donna, aka the runaway bride.

If I'm honest I'm a little unsure about this - the Donna character worked well in a single hour-long episode but I can see her grating a little over the course of a 13 week run. However, Tate's a brilliant actor and more than capable of playing it straight, so hopefully the character will have developed a little and not be quite so... whiny, when she comes back.

Showrunner Russell T Davies says: "Catherine was an absolute star in The Runaway Bride and we are delighted that one of Britain's greatest talents has agreed to join us for the fourth series. Viewers can expect more ambitious storylines and a whole host of guest stars in 2008." That's all good then.

Hope I'm wrong, but

Ick. I don't like annoying people.

I don't understand the Cringe Comedy that seems so popular today. Or wassername from BB8 that people love to hate. I just hate to watch it while she's there.

I don't really see CT in

I don't really see CT in that mould, I like her comedy generally.. I think Donna as she appeared in Runaway Bride was deliberately irritating, but she was created as a one-off, funny character that would carry the special to some extent and lift the mood for Christmas, particularly after Rose's exit in the previous episode.

She developed as the episode went on, we saw a little tragic side to her as she discovered the truth about Lance and so on, and her comedy facade broke down a little by the end. I'd hope she's going to come back as a much more mellow, rounded personality who's not going to intentionally grate in the same way.

Looking at the usual Who forums it's certainly a controversial appointment, but I've got faith in CT as an actress, and in the Who producers - I think this is going to pay off.

Yeah, say what you like

Yeah, say what you like about Catherine Tate, but she can act.

Hmm

At least we're less likely to get bogged down with all the love stuff we've had for the past 2 series. Although I'm ok with it and The Tenth is well worthy of having that kind of feeling for, it can get somewhat wearing.

I though Catherine did a good job at Christmas, particularly as I'm not too keen on her comedy on the whole. Her acting was good and I think the character has great potential.
