Cuil starts, stops
Stand back everyone, the new search engine that will topple Google from its lofty perch has arrived. "Cuil" (pronounced "cool", or perhaps "kewl") has been created by ex-Google programmers, and claims to have improved technology behind it which better understands the context of results it delivers, and all that kind of thing. Of course, being better than Google and actually replacing Google in people's bookmarks are two very different things, but there are murmurs that this one might be in with a shot. And hey, it's already more interesting than boring old Google, simply by virtue of being a black page instead of humdrum white.
The only snag right now is that, what with all the interest and everything, it's kind of fallen over and I can't get to it right now. See if you have any more luck - http://www.cuil.com

Been on Cuil - what's the point of being black just to turn white? Is it just change for the sake of it?

Apparently they've had a spot of bother - http://www.theregister.co.uk/2008/07/29/cuil_launch/ (not safe for work by the way!)

Tried it. It's utter pump.
It looks like they search more pages than Google do by indexing every known spammer in the business.
It's not the size of your cache. It's what you do with it that counts.

It does seem peculiarly bad on the whole. Problems I noticed on the first day, which I put down to server crashes and overload etc, are still there now. If I search on a shortened version of my employer's name, for example, it will show various useful hits many of which mention the company's name in full. If I then search for that full name (three very common words), it finds nothing. At all.
I think it probably came out of the oven a bit early.
