Well that wasn't bad, was
Well that wasn't bad, was it?
I can honestly say I had a grin on my face through most of that, which isn't a bad recommendation for a bit of saturday night hoopla. Yes the regeneration was thrown away in seconds and a bit of a cop-out as most predicted, but that did at least feed into a significant twist later on, so wasn't as pointless as all that. There were plenty more rabbits pulled out of hats, and there'll be plenty moaning about reset switches and the dreaded deux ex machina (I've seen people formally applying that label to just about everything, most notably K9), but what the hey, it was a rollercoaster ride which still held plenty of surprises.
Davros was excellent, Rose was good (I even enjoyed the slushy/bittersweet ending for her and the "other" doctor, old romantic that I am) and of course Catherine Tate/Donna really shone through, with both the comic Doctor-Donna stuff and the tragic ending showing exactly why she was cast in the role. Also, special mention to Bernard Cribbins for stealing the touching final scenes - he's been superb througout.
My disappointments: if I'm honest, I'd hoped for something a little more interesting from the semi-regeneration than another David Tennant - I know there's 0% chance of him doing it, but what if the hand had regenerated into Christopher Ecclestone, say? I was looking for something a little more gobsmacking like that. I was dissapointed in how quickly the Tardis was rescued and repaired too - I'm really quite bored of that set now, I was hoping that we were going to get something new built from the ashes of the old, but instead we just got Doctor 2 patching up a couple of roundels and all fixed...
Too many spin-off shows were drawn into this and last week's episode - I'm looking at you Sarah-Jane. I don't mind her so much on her own, and it was nice for her and Davros to have their little moment, but the boy and the awful "Mr Smith" and all the other paraphenalia from the SJ Adventures should have been left in that show, it jarred with the main event. Finally, the Tardis dragging the earth home (complete with cheesy "family" piloting it) is fine in theory, but did we have to have everything on earth jiggling about like there was a major earthquake going on, which in practice would mean that pretty much everything on earth was destroyed anyway? Silly.
But you know what, it was fun. Finales are never really the best or most believable episodes - the answers are never quite as interesting as the questions built up throughout the rest of the series - but this was as good a send off as any. And it really did have a sense of finality about it, being essentially the end of this current era of Who - the last series involving a few people, including Russell T Davies. We have only a few RTD-penned specials to sustain us now till 2010, when Stephen Moffat steps into the chair, and who knows what will happen then...

Oh Catherine Tate I bow down at your feet and worship your fabulous acting once again!
All of what Tim said, as usual.
Sobbed my heart out at Donna's 'death', how utterly cruel and totally heart-breaking!!
And yes, Bernard Cribbins was just brilliant; I want Wilfred to be my Granddad!
Anyone else want a Dalek Khan for Christmas?
Everytime I saw Dalek Khan
Everytime I saw Dalek Khan all I could think of was Garlic Naan - now I wouldn't mind one of those
I thought that Donna and Bernard Cribbins made that episode - they were amazing. The rest I thought was silly but enjoyable.
Very enjoyable - I was very
Very enjoyable - I was very saddened by Donna's "death" and impressed with the concept of the reality bomb.
The only plot point I didn't like was the way the Doctor's clone dealt with the Daleks - simply flipping a switch to turn the dalekanium power up to bursting point? I reckon they could have restructured the Osterhagen Key plot device to be the Dalek killer.
Cybermen? Groan.
But nuclear weapons bad.
But nuclear weapons bad. Can't have them saving the day.
True - genocide by exploding
True - genocide by exploding Dalekanium is much better...
Jeez, they didn't even try anger management counselling first
