It was a typically
It was a typically light-hearted-romp to open the series with, but I really enjoyed it - the adipose were amusingly cute (and more believable than some of the leaked pictures suggested), the story was well paced considering it had to re-introduce Donna etc, and the "supernanny" was a fantastic character, well played.
The Rose shocker at the end - absolute genius, exactly what everybody and yet nobody was expecting, and a clear sign that there's something much more interesting afoot than just the "companion heavy" reunion episode people thought they had figured out... I was starting to worry they'd given away too much about the events of this series, but obviously they've managed to keep a few surprises up their sleeve
I really liked Bernard Cribbin's character too, although his view of the Tardis at the end was a shockingly bad special effect! Loved it when he missed the Adiposean mothership earlier on though...
.
I was too busy still sobbing over Torchwood (which I'd watched immediately before) to really take it all in.
But I thought it was a good beginning.
Not seen the end of TW yet -
Not seen the end of TW yet - or the episode before that - but I understand there's been some terrible tragedy... tbh I'm not really a big fan of Torchwood, it's a little on the silly side (as opposed to Who which is often silly, but more intentionally so)..
PS - If anyone's wondering where all the extra votes are coming from, I've opened up the voting to the good people of Digital Spy's Who forum, who have sadly been denied the traditional DS poll this week for reasons unknown...
I'd have voted Very Good,
I'd have voted Very Good, except for the hamfisted "We're NOT having any sexual tension here mate!" scene.
"You want to MATE!?" - to be
"You want to MATE!?" - to be fair it was all a bit "how-very-dare-you", but it made me laugh! I suppose it helps that I quite like the sketch show..

I'm coming across as a bit of a grump today!
The Rose bit annoyed me because I'm starting to get detached from those big moments, because they're never permanent.
I was very happy to see it,
I was very happy to see it, because I've gotten into the very bad habit of spoiling things for myself - by reading all the forums and taking note of all the rumours etc - and it was still a shock when that random blonde bystander turned around. They managed to keep that one totally quiet, even the reviewers had only seen a edited copy with that scene removed, and it was a real treat to get a genuine surprise like that in the first episode..
For all that though, I think one of the things I love about DW is it can still surprise people - it can still pull off those "moments". The blog you linked to is an excellent summary of what went wrong with Star Trek, for a very long time it has been stuck in a very emotionless, formulaic vacuum, whereas DW still veers wildly between ideas in quite a refreshing way. Not all the stories work, but you - or at least I - never stop caring about it.

I enjoyed it. I liked the Adipose, they were very sweet although had I created them they wouldn't have a tooth.
I am irritated by the bit with Rose. I don't want a load of really discret hints that i'll never pick up on throughout the series as to whats going on, I want to know NOW!
Good, lighthearted yet
Good, lighthearted yet action-packed episode. I really appreciated most of the compositing, too (I didn't spot any of the greenscreen stuff until I saw Confidential) - apart from the bad colour correction on the last composite with the TARDIS and Donna's granddad.
Yep the waving scene jarred
Yep the waving scene jarred with me as well - I can see what you mean about the colour correction in retrospect, but for me all the angles were wrong, it was supposed to be a long shot (ie from earth to space) and yet, because the Tardis interior shot was obviously filmed close up, there was no depth to the Tardis interior.. does that make sense? Ideally the camera filming the inset shot should have been a similar distance away from the Tardis set as the viewer's eye was supposed to be from the real Tardis... which probably would have been a bit difficult, to be fair.

I get your meaning, it's a perspective issue... I'll have to watch it again to see exactly what I think of it. It was just the colours that stood out for me. I shall report back once I've re-watched it...
.
It makes me sad when people start to pull apart the work of The Mill. But I do appreciate what you're saying, it was a little clunky at the end there.
.
I initially used it as my bridge between Who's, but now I'm completely hooked....
...that's an addictive personality for you...

I think it's testament to their work that a slightly clunky scene like that really stood out - if the old series had achieved anything as good we'd have hailed it as a miracle of modern science. The new series has just taught us to have much higher standards.

Well, the point is (for me, at least) I intend to go into visual effects as a career, compositing in particular, and therefore can't help but analyse effects shots critically. The Mill is actually on my list of places to apply for once I'm done with uni.
