Video on a shoestring

Let's say you've got a basic camcorder and a PC, and that's it. What's the cheapest/free-est way to start producing and editing decent films from your camcorder footage, as a beginner with no budget?
What if it's an older analogue cam - not DV. What then?

Re:Video on a shoestring
Video editing software at Freshmeat could help for DV. If you're using an analogue cam, the cheapest way would probably be to get a cheap TV/video capture card for your computer, and then edit it digitally.

miniDV cams are so cheap these days that it wouldn't be worth your while getting a video capture card for an analogue camera. You can pick up a basic but competent miniDV for £150.
All miniDV cams have the ability to transfer footage via FireWire, and most come with a cable and software. Most PCs thankfully also have the appropriate ports.
