Tony - out in 12 months

So Tony Blair has today confirmed that he'll be stepping down in 12 months time, presumably handing power over to Gordon Brown. A lot of people will be thinking it's not before time.

Personally I'm in two minds about the whole thing. I can see that Blair, sadly, has become a liability for Labour and is unlikely to win another election, but at the same time I find it hard to believe that Brown can either. In some ways Brown is the worst of both worlds - part of the same unpopular government lead by Blair, but without the personality that kept Tony afloat up till now.

I also can't help thinking that at the last election we (or at least I and enough other people) voted for a Labour government under Tony Blair, not Brown. If we're going to go into the next election under somebody else, there at least needs to be a very open leadership contest first with some decent competition to Brown - and perhaps then a general election as soon as that replacement is appointed, not year(s) later.

Thoughts anyone?

I think Gordon Brown has

I think Gordon Brown has such a bad reputation and public perception that he will be doomed before even starting.

I think we need a new fresh face, not someone who is tired and worn out by it all.

Honestly now...

i've got a horrible feeling

i've got a horrible feeling that fresh face might be david cameron in a couple of years! tho maybe there's someone lurking in the background at Labour who'll pop out in time to take the leadership from Brown.

I suppose to be fair to Brown he's not had much of a chance to impress anyone as a PM material being stuck at the treasury talking about budgets, but if he just goes on talking about prudence when he's in number 10 it's bad news..

I'm almost certain that

I'm almost certain that there's nothing Labour can now do to win the next election.

Please

Can someone make a shiny new party, made up of all the right things? I despair, I truely do.

So who will win the next election?

So who will the next election? The lib dems seem more out of the running than ever; Cameron on the other hand has made up a lot of ground for the tories... I think it'd be disastrous if they got in, but it's looking quite probable.
