Timeshifting

I've discovered the best TV gadget in the world - the PVR. Got a Fusion FVRT100 a few weeks ago on ebay, and it's basically Sky Plus for freeview - twenty hours of recording time and a 14 day guide to all the channels. It's twin tuner so it can record two channels at once, and you can pause live TV, rewind it, and watch last week's Eastenders all at once. Lisa loves it!

Re:Timeshifting
Hmmmm, i really love it - i love the way it rules our lives and everyday when i get home i see another million episodes of Jeeves and Wooster recorded! i especially like it when i miss what someone says on the telly so tim insists on rewinding it and then we are behing actual telly and have no idea what the hell is going on.
I'm also especially fond of it's hit and miss coverage of ITV and Channel 4 - who could live without the thrill of never knowing whether we can actually watch the telly or not!
To be fair to it tho, it is v easy to record things we might miss and great for the quiz. And tim likes it - so i spose i do too

Re:Timeshifting
it doesn't rule our lives, it just frees us from the punishing schedule of live tv.. and commits us to the even more punishing schedule of watching all the things we've recorded instead, including a million things we never would have bothered to watch in the first place
i do like it tho
and it is recording linley and footballer's wives for you tonight...

Re:Timeshifting
It sounds wonderful and if my tv addict sister had one she would never leave her flat again. I already have a huge list of things to record for her while she is away this weekend and I animal sit for her.

Re:Timeshifting
tho it doesn't seem to do Top-Up TV or am I not seeing where the card goes in?

Re:Timeshifting
No TUTVon this box, or indeed most boxes to be fair - it's not exactly a popular service. The only TUTV compatible pvr has only just been released, in the last week or so - it's made by Topfield and costs about £300 (plus connection and sub).

Re:Timeshifting
Ouchie, I like my TOTV, the Discovery channel for me is a must have
Mythbusters rawks!

Re:Timeshifting
I don't really approve of Top Up to be honest. There's almost 5 million households watching digital terrestrial at the moment, of which only 4% have a TUTV subscription, but TUTV take up more than 15% of the limited bandwidth available. Many of the channels they sell would probably have gone to free-to-air by now if Freeview had been left alone to grow as a 100% free platform (bearing in mind that Satellite and Cable are already 100% pay)

Re:Timeshifting
That's true but I went with it because I wanted to watch the channels on it and unless the channels I watched did go free to air I'd miss it.

Re:Timeshifting
it's that actual wanting-to-watch-the-programmes trick they're counting on, i reckon. thing is tho, they're pretty much all either repeats of the main channels, or repeated on them pretty soon afterwards...
incidentally, E4 are indicating that they'll be going FTA by the end of the year anyway... nobody's too sure what TUTV are going to do then...

Re:Timeshifting
I'm mostly interested in the Discovery Channel as sad as it sounds. If that went FTA then I'd probably stop my subscription as that is the TUTV channel I watch the most. I watch UKTV Style the odd time too

Re:Timeshifting
Humm you're not the only one who likes it for mythbusters... i have a tendancy to go to the girlfriends place on long lunch breaks and watch such things at her place when she's at work, cheeky but meh..

Re:Timeshifting
I don't need one of those Tv recordy box things, I just use UK Nova. They get stuff on there pretty soon after its been aired, too (and anything not on there probably isn't worth watching anyway!)

Might just have to remember that one.....

Re:Timeshifting
I can't see Lisa settling in for a cosy night in front of the PC... but when all our TV's are running Windows Media Centre, maybe sites like that will realy come into their own?

Re:Timeshifting
Incidentally, anyone who might have thought about getting the fusion fvrt100 should now run out and get the fvrt200 - http://www.fusiondigitec.com/fvrt200_one.htm - twice the hard drive and better software (you can have folders and things). Tis getting good reviews at the mo.

Re:Timeshifting
I decided to bite the bullet and cancel TUTV and get a FVRT100 (couldn't afford the new one). Anyway, once question Tim if I may, is there an easy way to record the same thing each week or do you have to go through the calendar and set it to record every time?

Re:Timeshifting
'fraid not Giz, one thing it lacks (and the FVRT200 has) is a repeat facility.
One thing you should know - people have been having trouble with the power supplies failing on the FVRT100 (and some 200s) after a while, as they're too weedy to keep the box running all the time (their maximum output is about 2amps, and the box requires this as a bare minimum most of the time). When they fail, the box can misbehave in various ways, including trashing its recordings and generally buggering up.
I replaced mine pre-emptively with a 5amp model from here - http://www.digidave.co.uk/product_info.php?products_id=199 - about five months ago, and have had no problems at all, but my dad's had a nightmare with his and now taken it back to Curry's. Mine's an ebay job so I don't have that option!
Don't get me wrong tho, as long as it's working (and if you replace the PSU it will work fine) this is easily the best PVR on the market in my opinion, and a great piece of kit... what software version are you on?

Re:Timeshifting
Just whatever it was out of the box, I'll have a check sometime tonight and get back to you. As for the PSU I may do that next month when I have the money.

Re:Timeshifting
I only asked because if it's 1.6.3 or 1.6.4 you might have some problems with it locking up overnight. The updates are pretty regular tho, so don't worry too much.

Re:Timeshifting
well, I had a few issues with the FVRT100 (namely restarting when it wanted to create scenes) so I went back to Dixons, got a little extra money and got the FVRT200
