The McCanns in the media
Is anyone else a little disturbed at the coverage the McCanns are still recieving, even now they've been named as formal suspects in the dissapearance of their daughter?
I'm not going to pre-judge the case in any way, they may well be entirely innocent and Madeleine may even still be found alive and well, but that doesn't change the fact that right now, they are suspects in what is now being treated as a murder case. So why are the press still painting them as victims, beyond any reproach? Why are their various spokespeople still being given hours of unchallenged airtime, and acres of copy, to bang on about how ridiculous it is to suggest that the McCann's had something to do with this? Because let's face it, it's not ridiculous at all - in fact in any other case, perhaps where the parents weren't rich middle-class types with a formidable PR army behind them, they would have been under the highest suspicion from day one. The sad truth is that statistically, children are at far greater danger from their own family than they are from any mysterious strangers at the window.
In the early days the whole "find Maddy" campaign needed the McCann's to be high profile, and the McCann's used the media very well to spread what could have been an important message - but that message has been sent now, sadly it hasn't had any results, and now the shouting is over it's time for the media to step back and just allow the Portugese police to do their job. IMO.

I couldn't agree more. "Innocent until proven guilty" is one thing, but the media seem to have already taken sides - I'm worried the high media profile of this case could affect the outcome.

Agree with all points. Then
Agree with all points. Then again, the media interest was always massively disproportionate due to "missing white woman syndrome" - I'm not saying in the early days after the abduction the McCanns didn't have the right as parents to kick up as much of a fuss as possible, but after recent evidence and developments the case should definitely be given more respect by media outlets.
well see...
why does it always seems that the more fuss is made over it is when the parents are involved in some fashion? at least that's the way it seems in the states. not that the parents shouldnt be doing all they can to try to find her, believe me i would do the same, it just makes me wary...

case in point - sadly
stepfather kicks 3 yr old girl and leaves her to die while high on drugs (type not mentioned), and mom did nothing to help her. it gets worse, but you'll have to read for that.

it's quite different here in Belgium. In fact they just said on the news that the English media and Portuguese one are both chosing sides, ours isn't. As long as there's no real evidence either way, our media still takes into account all possibilities...

That's because you're in a neutral position tho, isn't it? The more the British media (in the hands of the McCann's publicist) slate the Portugese investigation, the more the Portugese press are going to point the blame at the British parents, it's just the way things go when nationalities and media interest mix like this.
The British media are ultimately at fault; if this was a story happening at home they'd be a lot more circumspect and unbiased, but because it's abroad and in the hands of pesky foreigners (and because the McCann's have a formidable publicist who's managed to keep all the heat off them up till now) the coverage has all become a bit farcical. Everybody just needs to calm down till the evidence is in, I think..

latest headlines in my local
latest headlines in my local paper said something about maddy being killed by sleeping tablets, but I didn't buy one and don't see anything about it on the regular news so far.
I think one of the
I think one of the conspiracy theories is that the parents could have sedated her in some way (they are doctors after all), and that might have gone wrong, leading to an accidental death to cover up - but I should stress that is pure speculation as far as I know, if the police do have any evidence for that then it's not been released.
