new monitor

i got a new monitor it's for my laptop really, cause the screen's been playing up lately, and i was afraid it would just stop working someday... and instead of waiting for that to happen, my parents got me a 17 inch flatscreen with built in speakers it's cool, working on 1280x1024 is just a bit nicer than on 1024x768

Re:new monitor
I'd really like a flatscreen, but my pesky seven year old CRT just keeps on working, boringly, so I can't really justify it!
On the plus side, I finally got around to putting Windows XP on my (formerly Win98) Thinkpad. A revelation! It'd taken to crashing perpetually and blue-screening every time the wind changed, but now it's like having a new computer! SO much more reliable, and suddenly all the nasty little IBM apps I'd used to have to use for power management, drive swapping etc are all redundant because Windows takes care of it all automagically...
Even tho, up till now I was using both XP and 98 at home, I'd somehow forgotten just what a big leap forward XP really is.

When I'm at home somtimes and I'm doing lotsa work (which doesn't happen a lot) I'll hook my laptop up to my 32" LCD tele.. lovely! Certainly a lot more real estate to work with and since it's spans two screens as well.. lovely.
One day I'll get rid of the CRT for my PC and replace that with LCD..

Re:new monitor
Monitors? Pah, they're for wusses. What you really want is a projector (and one of thses
of course...) cos a screen aint large unless you can measure the pixels with a tape measure

Re:new monitor
We have a projector in our lounge - the 6 of us put £100 in each. It's great for watching 24, Family Guy, and porn.
Here is the projector attached to the ceiling with a home-made bracket.

And here is the opposite wall, it projecting something.

Re:new monitor
nice setup.... bet the bulbs are expensive tho?
Anyone taken a good look at HDTV yet? We were in Comet the other day, where they had a load of big (and I mean BIG) HD Plasma's set up... the quality was good, but in all honesty, unless you actually need a screen that size I don't see the point in it. The resolution of that huge screen only appeared about the same as a bog standard normal-sized set, on which all that extra detail would have been lost anyway.

Re:new monitor
I have a HDTV, it's a Hitatchi 32LD6600 and it's lovely! 32" as mentioned before and when it's got the 360 running through it in 1080i it's stunning. It's cheapish compared to what it is now. It's £866 on empiredirect where I bought it from so it's gone down by quite a bit.
I hope to get Telewests' new HDTV box in time for the World Cup.

Re:new monitor
I suppose I was really suggesting that the difference isn't worth the hundreds of pounds it takes to upgrade, but that seems impolite now!
for HDTV to be introduced to terrestrial broadcasting (eg Freeview) it'll mean massive investment, new STB's, and setting aside huge swathes of limited bandwidth (possibly at the expense of some of the standard channels we have now) and all for... the benefit of people with 32" tellys? Just not convinced...

Re:new monitor
Well there is a difference. A friend of mine has a 360 but he runs his through a non-HD tv. As I've only ran mine through a HDTV I was interested to see what the difference is. So when he came round my place I asked him and when he said what he said and I remembered seeing it on his TV he's right. Colour is more defined and you can see a greater range of colour. Details are finer and look just amazing and text is clearer. Admittidly this is just a games console and not TV and I have read that HDTV is only really going to benefti sports broadcasts but my point is there is a discernable difference between the two.
But surely the future is to stop using aerials and use a cable network. Aerials are ugly, spoil the skyline and are just ugly. Granted cable is susceptible to some idiot with a digger but hey. I also think it's not for the benefit of people with large TVs. I can't really come up with any examples but I think the comment is obtuse in a way.

Re:new monitor
I agree there's a difference with big screen tellies, my problem with it is just that (a) TV at least still isn't all that impressive on them (based on my Comet experience at least, when they trying to impress us with a demo DVD) - it's good, but not that good, and (b) many people just don't want/need a big screen, and on a standard sized screen the difference is much less marked. That's not a problem you might think, let me have my 32" HDTV and them have their standard telly, but... (and this brings me to the second point...)
I don't think we should all be put on cable. Why? Because with cable, you get cable companies (be they BT, NTL etc) and those cablecos have physical control of the TV going into your house, and that means they can charge for it. Subscription all the way, for everything, whether you want six channels or sixty you end up paying through the nose for it. And I don't like paying for TV! I want to pay my license for the worthy public service that is the beeb, and then I want my TV to come down my aerial, for free, the way it's always done. Cable can't do that, Freeview can, but Freeview can't do HDTV! At least not without all new boxes and probably subs to boot.. so I can see HDTV killing Freeview off one way or another, and then we're all stuck in the wonderful world of Sky and NTL and direct debits that didn't used to be there for things that used to be free...

Re:new monitor
When the bulb finally goes it'll be £200 to replace - but we've had the projector on for at least 4 hours a day for a year and it's still fine. Between 6, £200 is not much.
A friend has a HDTV. He talks about nothing else - but I can't say it's technology that I'm particularly bothered about just now.
Re:new monitor
I've seen HDTV on smaller screens and there is still a markable difference. I honestly could never go back to watching TV on a smaller screen but that's just me.
Ok maybe saying going cable was a bad example but what about Wi-MAX or similar technology? Also, the beeb are doing HD as it is now with their wildlife stuff and the World Cup (which will be free). One thing though is that you don't like paying for TV which I do agree with, however, with the transistion to Digital people are being forced to change their kit. Ok, it's not expensive and it's a one off payment but it is a lil unfair. On from that though surely the turning off of terrestrial TV would free enough bandwidth for HDTV transmissions?!
I just think that perhaps your Comet experience has soured your view on it. HDTV is worth it, honest!
