Heroes

Did anyone see the new tv series 'Heroes' on BBC2 last night? I had missed all the hype beforehand (if there was any) and only caught it because it just happened to have tv on when it started. It is totally different to anything I normally watch and I can't wait to see what twists unravel during the series. Episode 1 and 2 were on last night. At the moment I think I can guess what will happen, but I may be totally wrong about the plot.

Don't mention what happens
Don't mention what happens in episode 2, we recorded it but haven't watched it yet! Saw the first one and it certainly lived up to some of the hype I'd seen... the characters are good (especially Hiro!) and I'm looking forward to how it all develops... although it's quite Lost-like in the sense that there a lot of characters and back-story's coming together at once, apparently the plot actually moves along a lot quicker and has more of a point to it, which has to be a good thing!
The BBC already have the rights to series two, which is good. I expect Sky will poach it from series three onwards though...

Heroes is excellent. I've seen the whole series, and it is certainly climactic. Excellent effects, too.
I love Hiro too. I have
I love Hiro too. I have never got round to watching Lost, so all this is a completely new concept for me.

Have watched the whole of Season 1 from when it aired in the states - and, rest assured, it is entire worlds of awesome.

Looking interesting so far..I love a bit of super powered nonsense me.

Having given up on my normal
Having given up on my normal level of spoiler avoidance, I watched the "comming next week bit" on last weeks episode.
It seems that they've gone for a serial rather than a series. Rather than a series of adventures each week that can for the most part be shown in any order, it's a drama where each week builds on what happens before.
I think I prefer shows with loose series arcs. I stopped watching Farscape for about a couple of seasons, and then started catching is occasionally, and It just didn't make sense. You had to have seen every previous episode for it to make sense.
I think Hero's has succeeded because it got a lot of advertising, and high initial viewing figures, but I bet it can't gain viewers as time passes.
If I'm honest, so far, it
If I'm honest, so far, my interest is waning. We've seen the first three now (and I know I'm going to be told it's too early to tell) but I'm feeling like it's all a little bit predictable and so-so... they're all hidden superheroes with special powers, they're all going to come together in some way to save the world (or at least new york) as it's their "destiny", they'll all struggle with and overcome their personal demons along the way, blah blah... the subplot with the DNA expert and his serial-killing prodigy has a slightly silly feel to it, as does Claire's ripped-straight-out-of-the-x-files CIA dad, and the whole thing (especially, but not exclusively Claire) owes a massive debt to Unbreakable.
Maybe the plot will do a big backflip in the next episode and I'll be hooked, we'll see...

A Disney sci-fi!!

Haha! Not half as much as you must depress the sci-fi king that is MR Lisa! Aww.
Disney Sci-fi, with singing aliens and dancing monsters (pink, fluffy one o'course!) and everyone living happily ever after.
Sounds like Farscape to me, which, incidentally, is missing from the list Mr Lisa!!!!!
Actually Disney did do a
Actually Disney have done a sci-fi, in film form - it was called "The Black Hole" and Lisa was very bored by it!
I suppose Farscape probably is something to do with Disney too - it's certainly Muppet related and I think they're owned by Disney now. I did consider including it, but I decided it was a bit old now, I know the BBC are repeating it at the moment but it's still long dead sadly... I guess you can say the same for Firefly, but the film was fairly recent at least.

Farscape is NOT dead, it's returning with webisodes very soon. And I never got into Firefly.
There's some good news on
There's some good news on this today (for us terrestrial viewers in the UK anyway) - the BBC have done a deal with NBC, makers of Heroes, to get first refusal on all future series at a pre-agreed price - so basically, there's no way that Sky can do a Lost or a 24 and snarf it up from series three - provided the beeb still want to show it then, that is.

I've been talking recently
I've been talking recently to one of the guys who worked on one of Hiro's "time freeze" shots, where he saves a little girl from a truck. The process of painting out the rigs used to hold people in place on a moving Steadicam shot like that is incredibly painstaking. But very rewarding!
but I thought it was all real!
Cool.
I thought it would all be done automatically with computers now, but I guess there's still a lot of grunt work involved for us meatsacks.
See, that's a really common
See, that's a really common misconception, and I think one that often drives an oft-used phrase - "too many visual effects". They are never, ever just something that can be done with a few clicks on a computer. Everything takes a hell of a lot of time, skill, and patience.
Visual effects extends far beyond the bells and whistles of lightsabers and CGI characters.
There are still guys whose job it is to draw lines, frame-by-frame, around objects in a shot for the purposes of putting visual effects behind them or applying effects specifically to that object. It's called rotoscoping, and although it's done digitally these days, there's very little automatic about it. The tragedy of their hard work is that, if they do it well, you never know it's there.
