Going nuclear

So the UK is now committed to building a new wave of nuclear power stations, along with renewable energy sources, as part of a bid to cut our reliance on imported gas and reduce CO2 emissions - http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/uk_politics/5166426.stm

What do we think?

Once upon a time I would have been utterly opposed to this, as the potential risks from nuclear power and the cost of cleaning up after it are immense... but now, in light of the real cost of fossil fuels and global warming, I'm not too sure.

I don't really know know

I don't really know know much about the current nuclear (or nuculear, as bush would say), I cant give a very educated answer. But I figure if we have a safe way to store the waste, then I would say go for it. I think a nuclear disaster every century or so (we've learned a lot from Chernobyl, would be a lot better than our constant pollution of the planet with carbon.

But maybe I'm just being naive...

i think you're probably

i think you're probably right... as you say, a lot has been learnt from the first generation - Chernobyl, Three Mile Island, and lesser problems here at places like Dounreay and Sellafield were all mostly down to original design issues in a previously unknown field. A lot of that pioneering work has been improved on elsewhere - for instance France are going to be supplying most of the expertise, design and components for our new stations, and I can't remember any serious incidents at any of their plants.
