More popular than a football
More popular than a football competition that England, Ireland, Scotland and Wales aren't in! It's like saying that Manchester United is more popular than the Super Bowl or some other silly comparision.

They'll probably cancel the next World Cup in favour of back-to-back Star Trek screenings...

Football is essentially pointless (unless all yer mates are Pompey fans!), whereas Doctor Who is essential to our survival.
As are Star Trek, Farscape, Stargate SG1 and other such documentaries.
