Daleks in Manhattan

Was anyone else a bit dissapointed by this two-parter? The first episode was a little flat but showed promise, the second unfortunately fell flat on its face I think. I'm really not keen on the Cult of Skaro - they were a bit camp and amusing in the last series, but this time around they were just silly and weak, with none of the menace that Dalek's really need to be credible characters. I only hope Dalek Caan goes away and has a good think about things before he stages any comeback.

As finale's go, Saturday's was especially poor. If there's anything less scary and less impressive than an army of mutant pig-men, it has to be a gormless army of "human daleks" with all the menace and conviction of a gang of flumps.

The ending felt very rushed, and the whole story really seemed very formulaic, and not entirely unlike the equally poor Cyberman two-parter last year. Shame.

Missed them both

Missed them both unfortunately, and forgot to set the recorder. But from the comments I've seen I don't think I mind waiting for the DVDs to catch up.

Sorry, I didn't mean to

Sorry, I didn't mean to spoil it... it's probably worth watching, but I don't get the feeling it's got much bearing on the rest of the series plotline, so in that sense you haven't missed much.

I think maybe they've been over-using the Daleks in the new series so far (by new series I mean the last three)... they don't have to come back each and every year, especially not when the Timewar is supposed to have wiped them out, and the Doctor just happens to be stumbling on yet another "last Dalek ever" each time... they need to resolve the whole Timewar/Last of the Daleks and Timelords thing, and reverse it to some extent, so we can get back to a Whoniverse where it's accepted that the Daleks are just everywhere anyway, swarming around in their legion. Then we should leave them alone for a series or two, and not let them come back till they're scary again.

Don't worry about it, the

Don't worry about it, the statue of limitations on spoilers, doesn't extend beyond the airing of the show. Plus I got my flatmate to give me a synopsis so I'd know what had happened.

I see your point about the Daleks being overused, since they are supposed to be all but extinct. I wonder if it was as a result of the licensing issues they had? They had such trouble they just decided that the Daleks wouldn't be everywhere. Then resolved the issues, so now they can be.

One thing I have quite liked is the Great Old Ones type stuff that happens occasionally. The idea of powerful being in the dawn of time, who are so much above us, we are like ants. The whole point being that they are inscrutable.

It was also done well in Babylon 5, and the Magicians Nephew (Narnia).

The poignancy of the Doctor

The poignancy of the Doctor creating a new race of Time Lords, only to have them destroyed within seconds didn't get you then?

No, it wasn't great, but there were elements....
