Back to Readers Wires basics

Once upon a time, the principal activity in this particular forum was listing exactly how great our computers were, so other people could explain exactly how much better their's were, and so on. It seems like ages since we've done that now... are we all busily pretending we're not geeks anymore? Surely we haven't grown up that much?

I want to see some specs, and I want them now. Who's going to start?

Re:Back to Readers Wires basics

well it's a start... ok, well I still have a boring old english keyboard (actually a really cheap and horrible one that I'm amazed is still working), and the rest of the PC is this -

  • 2.4g Athlon processor (actually 2g but it's 2400 in AMD money),
  • 512mb ram
  • 2 x 40gb Maxtor hard drives (both 5400rpm - one is the original drive with the OS etc on it, and the other was originally in our Digifusion PVR, replaced by a 120gb drive and now used for itunes),
  • Cheapo motherboard,
  • 1 x CDRom, 1x CD writer & DVD combo drive, 1 x floppy,
  • Sad old 17" CRT monitor which just keeps on working, damnit,
  • OS: XP Pro, with Firefox, itunes, and Office 2000 (most used in that order).

We've also got a slightly tired IBM Thinkpad T20 still running Win98, but quite sprightly for its age..

Re:Back to Readers Wires basics

Ok, I'll see that and raise you (well not really as you have the quicker CPU)

  • AMD Athlon 2000XP (~1.6Ghz)
  • NForce2 Mobo
  • 512MB Ram
  • SB Audigy 2
  • 17" Monitor (pretty crappy though I can plug my puter into my 32" LCD TV)
  • Radeon 9550 GFX Card
  • Nice big case with 7 silent fans a glowing blue PSU

I also have an iBook G4 which again I can plug into my tele

Re:Back to Readers Wires basics

Hey I forgot the graphics and sound, see how out of practice I am? It's an FX5200 Geforce card, and an Audigy (that's a 1, not 2).

But my processor still beats your processor

Re:Back to Readers Wires basics

Hmm, let's see...

2.4 GHz Pentium 4
1 gig RAM
2 x 40GB hard drives
1 x DVD/ CD Rom RW
1 x Floppy drive
Logitech Wireless Keyboard / Mouse
17" Proview TFT Monitor with built in speakers
GeForce 5200 graphics card

It does the job I guess

Re:Back to Readers Wires basics

The main system is:

  • AMD Sempron 2400+ (actual speed 1666MHz)
  • 512MB RAM
  • 80GB + 40GB hard drives
  • Geeforce2 graphics card
  • CD-RW
  • DVD reader
  • TV card
  • 17" TFT

I might not be able to win on specs, but from where I'm sitting right now I have within reach[*] no less than four computers, and a KVM so that I can use them all.

*OK, so I do have to lean over to get to the laptop bag, but I don't have to get out of the chair

Re:Back to Readers Wires basics

I also forgot to mention my 5400rpm 40gig drive and my 7200rpm 120gig drive.. silly me. Did I also forget the 933Mhz PC I have running server 2003 and my 600Mhz PC running Kubuntu linux?

Shame on me!

hehe
