Ashes are coming home!

I'd just like to post a serious post about the fact that England have regained The Ashes. I don't know how many people here on Boinng are interested in Cricket (I know Cati is but she won't be happy that us Pommes have won) but if you have been watching you'll know what a cracker of a series it has been.

There have been three nail biting finishes and some fantastic bowling and batting on both sides. We've seen some of the best bowling ever by Shane Warne, Simon Jones, Andrew Flintoff and Glen McGrath. The batting has had its moments (Flintoffs massive 6 at Edgbaston anyone?) and well, the finishes we've had have been something to believed. The best thing about it all is the sportsmanship. When we won at Edgbaston Flintoff consoled the desolate Bret Lee, good bowling or batting have been acknowledged on either side and (except for Mr Ponting) even when decisions have been wrong they've been accepted and they've moved on. This is a stark contrast to football where decisions are nearly always argued. It's brought cricket to the fore of young kids and showed them how sport should be played.

Lets hope this doesn't fade away like our Rugby victory in the World Cup and that cricket continues to get massive crowds and coverage whether it's County or International level. I think if it does then perhaps the kids of today will bring good sportsmanship in to whatever sport they play.

Re:Ashes are coming home!

ricky ponting accepts decisions, he was just upset at the way england were using the substitute fielder thingy, different thing to bad umpiring decisions

I'm not going to argue the pros and cons of the sub fielder thing though, cause I don't know enough about it (and I have read Ricky's side but it'll be biased).

The irony of cricket's new found popularity is that, as with popular sports in the past, Sky have spotted a gem and stolen it away to subscription telly - so there'll be no more test matches on terrestrial TV where everyone can see them.

I know, it's such bad timing really. We were wondering if they could get something, even a highlights program, onto terrestrial...

or if we can't get internationals the County game will suffice. Just any cricket really because it is the best sport for kids to watch as sportmanship is so rife within it.

I am really pleased for the England team, but I still can't get in to cricket. No matter how many times someone explains the rules to me, I just don't understand it.

I'm not sure if county would be enough though, international is often such a different level - you'd want the one dayers like the natwest series, obviously the Ashes is the biggest of them all. Maybe international cricket that doesn't involve England, like the India-Australia series at Christmas time.
