Planet Boinng began life back in April 1999 as a simple homepage, created by a geek called Tim Cook. That was back in the days when it was "cool" just to have a page on the web. Well, cool if you were a geek anyway.

It got bigger over time, sprouted a message board which a few other geeks became regulars on, and then in April 2001 it became a real community, when the whole site was opened up for everyone to post on. Ever since then, Boinng has been growing at a fairly steady but barely noticable rate, becoming what people these days call a "collaborative weblog". Which is a pretty lousy description for a place which isn't really about anything in particular, and which pretty much anyone can post any old rubbish on.

There's loads of rubbish on here by the way. Apart from news on all sorts of stupid topics, there's some drivel posted under features, tons of blogs, and of course the forum. When you get sick of reading all that tripe, there's some pictures in the gallery too.
