Why the Iphone makes me sad
It's just so damned shiny.
I have a real gadget crush on the Iphone, I really like the design, the UI is great, and this time around with the 3G, I really thought this might be my Iphone. While last year's Iphone was pretty but vacant, with the features list of a phone from 2002, this year's had all the right headlines - broadband speed data! Exchange email! GPS! Affordable price!
Coming from my current Windows Mobile phone, the Iphone is like a Ferrari next to my Windows Mobile people carrier - it's slicker, faster, better looking, and just sexier all round.
But that's where the analogy starts to get me down. The Ferrari Iphone only has two seats. What about all my analoguous children? Where will the ugly daughter of Copy & Paste sit? What about my favourite son, the Exchange-compatible task list? And who could forget little Tommy TomTom, where will he perch?
Excuse me while I choke back a sob, press the keys to the Iphone back in the salesman's hand, and send it racing back to the garage. The battered old Ford Galaxy that is my Windows Mobile phone is still there in the driveway, as essential as ever. It's not pretty, the GPS takes forever sometimes, the windscreen isn't multitouch, and the steering wheel sometimes comes off in my hands, but unlike the Iphone it's built for life and can seat the whole family.
If only I could see through the tears to drive...

Early next month... maybe (I decided to get a new monitor instead this month, finally ditching my old 19' CRT that was frankly a health hazard).
I really am see-sawing on
I really am see-sawing on this one, there's an awful lot to like about it, but so many snags and missing features at the same time.
Picture messaging, copy and paste, editing spreadsheets and the like, Tasks synced with Exchange, TomTom for directions in the car - I use most of those fairly regularly on my current phone, but the Iphone just does none of it. Video, music, calls, texts, email, calendar, lots of random little apps, yep - all very sexy and working well on the Iphone, in many cases better than any Windows Mobile phone, but only at the cost of so much else
