Why I Hate Facebook, and Why This Site is Also Rubbish

I killed my Facebook self on Friday. I've finally had enough with the thoroughly hyprocritical way in which I couldn't stand Facebook, but wanted to be on it regardless.
Here's an assorted list of reasons why Facebook irritates the hell out of me:
- It's a successful community website, which this isn't.
- The applications drive me mad.
- I don't have a funwall, so how can anyone have posted anything on it?
- Why the hell would I want to bite chumps?
- You only need one idiot to include you in a mass-mailing to all their friends on Facebook to get inundated with spam everytime anyone replies to the thread they've created, no matter how many times you delete it from your own inbox..
- Tim is sick of thinking of things that Tim is, and sick of reading what everyone else is too.
So anyway, Tim isn't there anymore, which is a good thing. Of course it doesn't matter that I'm not represented on Facebook, because I have this whole website here to play with... which would be okay, except that this place is rubbish too - and there's nobody around to see it outside of Facebook anyway. Crap.

see that's just not true -
see that's just not true - I'm not on facebook and I'm reading this, though I'll admit not giving a crap about any website atm
The only bad things about
The only bad things about Facebook are the fucking applications, and the fact that it is nothing but a very clever market research gathering tool. Otherwise, I like it. I'm on it, and I organised the Forest II premiere through it - and got at least an extra 30 attendees because of it.
As far as this site goes... well... I hope I'm not overstepping my boundaries by saying it doesn't really have a purpose. Users (occasionally) post unrelated topics that are covered in every conceivable global news medium. In it's early days, Boinng was about an enjoyable if esoteric brand of humour. Now, that is heavily diluted.
I hope I'm not being too harsh, but I feel the move to database-driven content management systems may have been the wrong step for Boinng.
I don't think that Boinng is
I don't think that Boinng is rubbish, I agree it lacks purpose but that doesn't make it rubbish.
I have a love/hate relationship with Facebook. I HATE the applications - i don't want a sexy poke/to become a werewolf/to find out my credit score/to be 'friends' with someone who didn't like me a school and only friended me to see what I look like now. However, I have got back in contact with someone through it and I like being nosey...

Harsh? Probably not. Six years too late? Possibly.
Rightly or wrongly, Boinng's always been about "unrelated topics" - for a long time (since even before the move to a CMS, when the old messageboards took off) it's been about a community, and what random members thought about random things. It's that side of things that's simply been taken over by sites like Facebook, by virtue of their much larger audience. Facebook, Myspace et al have shaken off the nerdy clique-ness of sites like this and made internet wittering mainstream. Which doesn't leave much for this place to do anymore.

Uncharacteristically, I agree with all of that.
When I'm on Facebook, which is, I'm almost ashamed to admit, a hell of a lot thesedays, there's generally someone around to talk to, something which I need very much lately. And when I send someone a message they reply within the same day!! Amazing.
But that doesn't mean I want this place to go!! This place is a part of me and I don't want to lose it......
