The Upgrade

So anyway, on Friday morning I decided to upgrade the site to the latest (stable) release of Drupal, going from 4.7.7 to 5.2 and taking all of the various modules we use with me. 5.x has actually been around for quite a while, but the thought of updating everything had me veering towards the dark side of sticking with what I knew worked already... the problem with that, is what happened to the old Postnuke-based site. If you remember, it got so behind and out of step with current developments, it was virtually impossible to upgrade it to the newest Postnuke, and ended up being wide open to hackers and other problems. I didn't want to end up back in that position, so I bit the bullet, and here we are.

Of course, if you're an Internet Explorer user, you haven't actually been here since I pressed that button on Friday morning, because one of the updated modules was shonky and ended up making most of the site impossible to read in IE. Sorry about that, IE fans. You really ought to be using Firefox of course where everything looked fine, but on balance it's probably better that the "new" boinng now works in both browsers (and hopefully a few others besides).

The changes between 4.7.7 and 5.2 probably look fairly subtle to most of you - they do to me - but lots has changed under the hood, hopefully for the better. We have better protection against spammers now (in the form of working captcha's on the registration and contact pages), little buttons for BBCode, an Invite a Friend feature (if they register you'll get 10 boince btw) and a few more little enhancements here and there. Being on the current version also means there's a lot of other new Drupal toys available for me to try out and add in due course too, so expect to see some more new tricks later on.

There's bound to be a few gremlins left of course, so let me know if you spot any around...
