Bitter blow
It was a sad day for me yesterday, when we arrived at the pub in Catherington where the music quiz is held every week, only to find that the best beer in the world was no longer on the pumps. HSB (Horndean Special Bitter) was gone.
It's been on the cards for a while now. Fullers, a brewery of *******'s based in Chiswick, London, bought Gales (the Horndean-based brewers of HSB) a couple of years ago, and proceeded to shut down the brewery itself almost immediately, ripping the heart out of the small town of Horndean in the process. Next they installed their thoroughly mediocre London Pride in every Gales pub, pushing it as their flagship ale. Superior brews such as Gales' Butser were lost in that first round. Now, with its target ale-drinking market split by London Pride, HSB apparently isn't selling well enough. Since the old Gales pubs (which are all now being rebranded as Fullers) have to flog London Pride anyway, HSB is getting shafted.
I was forced to have a pint of Pride last night, and I've never enjoyed a pint less. I couldn't even bring myself to finish the tepid, lifeless brew. It's a poor imitation of a real beer, and serves only as a bitter reminder of the local brew that once was. I'll be switching to Guiness in that pub from now on, or to whichever other beer has the lowest profit margin for Fullers.
Rest in peace, HSB.

Hrngh! Gits. I've never
Hrngh!
Gits. I've never found a beer I like quite as much as HSB.
Best drink as much of it as
Best drink as much of it as you can wherever you can find it, I suspect it's not long for this world. If the Farmer's have given up on it, the others can't be long behind
.
It's true, HSB is to be no more very soon. I know I don't drink it, but as a former regular of a former Gales pub I agree it's a travesty.
Gah! I've just had a look
Gah! I've just had a look around the Fullers, and Gales sites
Fullers.co.uk doesn't list HSB amongst their beers, just a link to Gales.co.uk which they're not even pretending to update.
The worst part is all the links to Camera they have. I asked for HSB at the Reading Ale festival once, and got told very firmly that they won't touch Fuller's on principle.
What non profit for Fullers
What non profit for Fullers drink did you spend all last night drinking Tim?
Well they had Fullers' ESB
Well they had Fullers' ESB on tap this week, and I had to sample it at least, in all fairness... I can't pan it without trying it first, can I?
And after trying five pints, I can't pan it, it's good stuff - not as good as HSB obviously, but a LOT better than rubbish Pride. The only thing is, it's made my head hurt...
